What Do Our Dreams Mean?

“Awareness is the process of freeing the conscious mind from the bondages which cause conflict and pain, and thus making it open and receptive to the hidden. The hidden layers of consciousness convey their significance through dreams and symbols. If every thought-feeling is thought out, felt out, as fully and deeply as possible, without condemnation or comparison, acceptance or identification, then all the hidden layers of consciousness will reveal themselves.” — J Krishnamurti

What do our dreams mean, especially the ones that seem to make no sense? One train of thought is that it reflects what we really desire—whether in that moment or in life overall. Sigmund Freud, for instance, echoed Krishnamurti’s wisdom by positing that studying the content of dreams can illuminate our hidden and unconscious desires.

What is stopping us from interpreting our dreams, from finding out what what we want deep down? What is stopping us from discovering (and living up to) our potential? We ourselves.

We suppress our conscious and subconscious minds by listening to others, by trying to keep up with Sharmas, and by accumulation sheer nonsense along the way.

If you want happiness, you must stop living for a distant moment and start living in the present. You must build the courage to stay with a thought-feeling until you have reached its depths.

Then, you will no longer need to decipher the cryptic meanings behind your dreams, because they will not show you anything you don’t know already.
