When You Argue, You Lose

“Do not argue… if one forces arguments upon you, be silent. Do not answer any argument but go away calmly, because arguments only disturb the mind. The only thing necessary is to train the intellect; what is the use of disturbing it for nothing.”

— Swami Vivekananda

Everyone is trying to win arguments, whether on social media, in text messages, emails, or face-to-face.

But what do you get even if you win (assuming the other party hasn’t just kept quiet out of frustration)? You squander energy that could’ve been invested in constructive tasks. You lose the ability to listen. You jeopardize the relationship. Most importantly, you sacrifice your peace of mind. The price is just not worth it.

If you’re an intellectual, you may have high-quality arguments. But if you’re a karta (a doer), you know that arguing is the respite of the lazy and foolish; it’s better to direct your energies on meaningful decisions and actions instead. Remain a lifelong learner, retain your peace, and turn your dreams into goals.

If you think something is wrong, fight for what you believe in. But let your actions speak louder than words. Arguments are nothing but a waste of time.
