The Difference Between the Lowest and Highest Man

“The lowest man is he whose hand draws in, in receiving; and he is the highest man whose hand goes out in giving.” — Swami Vivekananda

Some people are obsessed with taking. To the point where they will take any path that gets them what they want. Values, ethics, and morals don’t matter (if they have any in the first place).

But even if they get what they want, they are miserable. Why didn’t I get more? How can I get the next thing that I want? Questions like these will never let them be at peace.

Givers, meanwhile, are never held ransom by compulsion. They know they have enough. They can recognize the difference between the important and trivial. And they are free because they are not tied down by what they have.

You don’t grand gestures in giving. Smile, leave a kind word, allow the person in front to pass, help someone in need.

Repeatedly taking weakens your character; giving without expectation strengthens it.
