The Mind Must Be Checked

“As a drawer is useful only when empty, so the mind must be free of all its accumulations, for only then can there be openness to the wisdom and the ecstasy of the real.” — J. Krishnamurti

We can say a drawer is useful when its empty and when it holds the items we find useful. But if not periodically checked. it overflows with unnecessary things and becomes dirty.

The mind too, if left unchecked, can accumulate useless thoughts and become unclean. One must keep checking on it—through meditation, reflection, walks in nature, the study of philosophy, or all of the above. This is how we can keep the mind in peace.

What are you holding on to that you should let go of? What have you forgotten that you should hold on to? How can you see a current or past situation from another angle without judging whether your thoughts are good or bad? Encourage your mind to discover the answers to such questions by digging beneath the surface.

This is the elementary step for experiencing what is real rather the imaginary things inside your head. This is the elementary step to keep the mind in peace.
