The Will Is Everything

“Who can make us ignorant? We ourselves. We put our hands over our eyes and weep that it is dark. Take the hand away and there is light; the light exists always for us.”

— Swami Vivekananda

In the movie Batman Begins, Bruce Wayne tries to justify why his father couldn’t save himself or his wife from being killed by a robber. “He didn’t have training,” Wayne says to Ducard, the warrior who is training him to become a better fighter. In return, Ducard says, “Your training is nothing. The will is everything.” (You can watch the scene here.)

How did the trillion-celled human being evolve from a single-celled amoeba? By sheer will, according to Swamiji. Astonishing, right? It shows our capability to do so much more than we can imagine!

“If you make yourself more than just a man, if you devote yourself to an ideal, you become something else entirely,” Ducard tells Bruce Wayne.

Don’t squander your potential on petty things. Strengthen your will and character. Strive for an ideal greater than yourself. Don’t feel helpless in the dark. Remove your hands covering your eyes and you’ll find light.
