How to Change The World

“We feel, if only there were a good leader, the world would be perfectly right. So we are looking to leaders and not to the true function of individuality. When you are trying to understand true individuality you are bound to cooperate, because that is part of it.”

— J. Krishnamurti

The Butterfly Effect states that a butterfly flapping its wings in one part of the world (say Japan) could alter how air flows so drastically that it leads to a typhoon in another part (like Hawaii). This may be an exaggeration, but there is an element of truth to it. Tiny changes are often the ones that significantly impact how events turn out in the long term.

Today, it’s common to blame others for how bad the world is. Politicians are dividing us, companies are exploiting us, the media is lying to us… we are waiting for someone to fix things. But there’s no watershed moment that will change the world, tiny contributions by you and me will.

If you think kindness, honesty, and service will change the world, practice them. Start with your family and friends, extend it to your surroundings, and then to the world. Don’t wait for permission, don’t wait for “someone to do something about it.” Be the change you want to see.

Who knows what kind of positive typhoon your tiny butterfly wings could bring?
